About the Shadow sides series
In 2019, Valère Wittevrongel began painting geometric abstract works in very dark colors, almost (but not quite) black, in conjunction with a dark red. This red is important. It is the underlying color in these paintings. Beneath the dark paint skin, the red is still present, appearing in narrow bands on the surface between the deep dark green, dark purple and dark brown areas. Valère Wittevrongel, Shadow sides Sq2 (2021) is one of the smaller paintings in these, still ongoing, series.
