Graphic art or printmaking is art made by means of a printing process, often done by hand. An etching is graphic art. So are a lithograph or linocut, silkscreen and blind embossing. New printing techniques include high-quality inkjet printing (also called piezo printing or giclée) and riso printing, an improved form of stencil printing.
Stamping can be understood as the basis of printing techniques. Stamping, woodcut and linocut printing are referred to as relief printing: the ink is on the surface of the printing form. In intaglio printing, such as etching and engraving, the ink is not applied to the surface but in the grooves and lines of the printing form. And in screen and riso printing the ink is pressed through the open parts of a fine grid: this is called through printing. Stencil printing is also a through printing technique.
