Broad sweeping brushstrokes over narrow dripping lines over skimpy areas covering a lived-through paint structure. Nies de Vuijst applies mixed and transparent paint in movable or straight strokes and wipes sections again. Blended tones and fine details emerge as she paints. Gravity plays an important role in the wet areas, where the paint is allowed to flow downwards. Guided by intuitive but considered choices, the color layers on the linen build a balanced image, in which noisy strokes are contained by a quiet field of restrained color.
