About the paintings of Herman van de Poll

Herman van de Poll creates paintings that show a seemingly unpredictable pattern of squares in a square field. In a sense he is portraying nature, but without representing natural phenomena realistically. Language provides the code for a self-created system that turns chaos into geometry. Painted squares are the colorful translation of signs, with each block defined by the square next to it. Extension of this tamed chaos, enlargement of the plane, is conceivable to the infinite.

On Geometric Chaos (geoChao)

“The language of my work is based on the mathematical forms from Chaos Theory.
The ideas of Chaos Theory and fractal geometry lead to the development of the compositions in my work. In the series geoChao, I focus on the square.
I develop my compositions by exerting as little influence on them as possible; I let a method of my choice determine the composition.
The ‘dismantling’, the removal of the tape, remains exciting. Until that moment, the whole remains hidden and the result will be a surprise.”
