About Monique Kwist Tidal Pool: the series Places to be and Balancing sites.
Inspired by landscape and architecture, Monique is playing in her material with contrasts of fluent natural lines and geometry. She explores depth and maximum possibilities of relief in paper. The silent embossment, normally on the edge of visibility, gets a physical aspect you would not expect. Sometimes she makes a second print. The multiple is not the goal, but the wooden seals can be re-used, as she did in clay and sand.
Imagining more levels in the relief which the paper could not show, modeling clay and sand were an alternative to explore. A selection of seals were pressed by hand into these materials. In this more spontaneous acting, specific locations appeared like modelling landscape-architecture. “It felt while working, as if I had already been there, on one of my journeys in remote regions.” During these processes of making she used the camera to focus on details to intensify the experience of scale.
